Systems thinking, popularised in recent times by the economic miracle of Toyota’s production system, demonstrated that thinking beyond the prevailing system of management, transforms organisational performance. It was Dr W Edwards Deming, who originally taught the Japanese to manage organisations as systems, and that the purpose of leadership was to lead people to understand business as a system of work.
